There are three main industries served by the SB & BS RR, one of them is the SKAIL Lumber Co. Trees are harvested and brought to the sawmill where they are cut into various size lumber.

The sawmill is a highly modified Keystone Locomotive Works Danby Sawmill. It has been widened and lengthened and a second story shop added. Construction is board-by-board.

A lot of the interior details like the edger, cut-off saw, rollers etc... are scratch-built. Most of the pulleys and hangers are from N.W.S.L. with various other details from a bunch of manufacturers including a million Grandt Line NBWs. The belts are strips of plain brown paper bags.

Work has stopped at the mill because one of the belts has jumped the pulley. A worker takes this opportunity to sweep sawdust off the floor, a necessary function for safety at all sawmills.

The foreman poses for a picture. On the left is the edger, the boiler is barely visible in the corner (the white styrene is the unfinished smokestack). The steam engine and pulleys to the main saw are on the right. The pulley without a belt brings power to the second story shop.

The scratch built cut-off saw swings like the real McCoy, note the green counterweight. The belt is off its pulley, that explains why nothing is running at this time, note also the belt tensioner and geared transmission.

Scratch built edger. Power comes from under the mill which is as detailed as the rest. Rollers pull the wood in while the saws rotate in the other direction.

There are plenty of details with all sorts of power tools, machines and the workbenches have their own tools too, even a brassy spittoon. The "lounge area" is where workers take their breaks, it has chairs with clothing draped on the backs, a table with an empty bottle, coffee cups and a newspaper the clutter here is different than elsewhere. An enamel coffee pot is on the stove and a dog is keeping guard.

There is still a lot of work to be done, handrails for the stairs that lead to the shop, the smoke stack, windows, more figures and other details.
